Vanesa Castan Broto
Professor of Climate Urban Planning at the Urban Institute at the University of Sheffield, where she leads a team of researchers working on urban responses to climate change, climate change policies and location-based environmental governance. She is Principal Investigator of the Low Carbon Action in Ordinary Cities (LOACT) project funded by the European Research Council (2019-2024) and Community Energy and Sustainable Energy Transitions in East Africa (CESET) funded by the UK Global Challenges Research Fund (2020-2023). His latest books are Urban Energy Landscapes (Cambridge University Press) and Urban Sustainability and Justice (with Linda Westman, ZED Books).

He is involved in two development programs that have as their objective the definition of solutions inherent to the spectrum of solutions related to Urban Mobility and the development of innovative solutions to make metropolitan areas more intelligent and “appealing”.

The development of new sales concepts for Retail, ergonomic analysis and the continuous search for social dynamics are the basis of his work.

Born in Nuoro, now lives in Cagliari. Married with two daughters. Graduated in Civil Transport Engineering and PhD. Associate Professor at DICAAR – Department of Civil Engineering, Environment and Architecture of the University of Cagliari; his courses are “Freight Transport and Supply Chain”, “Urban Transport” and the Degree Laboratory “Evaluation of Transport Projects” for Civil Engineering. He is General Manager of Centralabs, Center of Excellence Transport of Sardinia, a consortium of companies with the University of Cagliari and Sassari and several public and private companies in the transport sector. Since 1992 he carries out research activities on the interaction between land use and transport, human factors related to the active and passive safety of transport, maritime transport, goods and supply chain. He is scientific coordinator and technical director of several national and international research projects. He is author of 5 books and about 90 articles. He has collaborated with several public administrations and some private companies for the development of projects and plans in the field of transport, traffic and mobility.

He managed the largest smart city project in Vienna called “Smarter Together” and is now head of the Department of Social Services at the Vienna Social Building. He currently teaches at the Technical University of Vienna.
Daniele D. Giusto
He received his degree in Electronic Engineering and PhD in Telecommunications from the University of Genoa, Italy, in 1986 and 1990, respectively. Since 1994 he has been a permanent member of the faculty of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Cagliari, Italy, where he became full professor of Telecommunications in 2002. His research interests are in the area of smart cities, sensor and IoT networks, mobile and professional networks, digital media. Dr. Giusto is a senior member of the IEEE, has been a member of the IEEE Standard Committee (2007-2010), has been the Italian delegate in the ISO-JPEG and is the Italian delegate in the ISO-Smart Cities committees.

Roberto Lippi is a political scientist, with over 30 years of experience in planning and managing international cooperation initiatives, in the fields of sustainable development, territorial planning and governance, innovation and promotion of human rights. Since 2013, he is an executive of UN-Habitat (United Nations specialized Agency for urban and territorial development). As UN-H Coordinator for the Andean Countries (2016-2020), he participated in the realization of the 3rd UN Global Conference for Sustainable Urban Development (Quito, October 2016), in which the “New Urban Agenda” was adopted. As senior advisor to Latin America Directorate of UN-H, he is currently leading the establishment of the Technical Secretariat of the Smart Latam Alliance, a multi-stakeholder initiative that brings together international organizations, public institutions, companies and universities, in order to promote the concept of Smart cities and Smart territories in the LAC Region.
Master in Architectural Engineering at the University of Pavia. In 2016 he started a PhD at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Mechanical Engineering of the University of Trento which was funded by the EURAC research center. The PhD thesis was successfully defended on May 22, 2020. During the thesis, he developed, together with colleagues, a method and a software tool for the dimensioning of integrated photovoltaic systems in an economic context based on self-consumption. From 2017 to 2019 he was WP leader in the EnergyMatching H2020 project. In the project were applied the design methods developed for the design of 3 BIPV systems as part of the retrofit of 3 buildings and neighborhoods in different European countries, the plants are now under construction. Transferred to the University of Dalarna (Sweden), his research focuses on future business models for collectively shared or P2P PV systems at district level using agent based models. The objective of this research is to investigate the financial and economic means to implement an optimally designed BIPV system.

Sandra Marin Herbert
Economist based in Malaga, Spain, with over 15 years of experience in promoting sustainable urban models from integrated approaches for local governments, co-financed by European funds. She is a senior expert at DG Regio to support cities in the development of their integrated urban strategies under Article 7 ERDF directly in the Member State or through the Urban Development Network (UDN). In the field of international urban cooperation, she is currently the coordinator of the Methodological Taskforce of the European Union’s International Urban Cooperation (IUC) programme, supporting cities in the design of their cooperative action planning with China, India, Japan, Latin America and North America.
Two degrees in humanities but a past as a computer technician first as a manager in Microsoft Italy and then as an executive in KPMG Advisory. He has taken part in many innovation projects of great importance in various PA and in the major Italian private companies and banks. During its career it has matured one vast experience in the thematic ones of the eGovernment (eProcurement, eCommerce, monitoring and protection of the Environment and the Territory) and the Cyber Security. He has participated as an expert in various technical tables of the various agencies, national and international, for the definition of standards and the drafting of technical guidelines for interoperability, digital identities and INA-SAIA registries. Since 2004 he has dedicated himself to teaching as a contract professor at various universities (Tor Vergata, LUISS, Link Campus) and from 2004 to 2010 he directed the Study and Research Center for High Technologies at Link Campus University. Startupper, with the Innovation dot, has taken part in several Research & Development projects in Italy and Europe, dealing with issues related to Security, Safety and Civil Protection. Currently, he holds the position of Digital Innovation Manager for the Techno Center group.

His research interests in the last five years have focused on the process of co-creation of value in tourist destinations and in particular on the relevance of collaboration and learning processes in the definition of territorial and business development strategies.
Geographer with experience on the urban environment and in particular on city climates. His research on urban climatology began more than three decades ago with the work of modeling and measuring the climate of city streets. He has published several articles on aspects of urban climate and is a co-author of Urban Climates, a comprehensive textbook on urban climate science. His current work focuses on the development of a global database on cities suitable for urban climate studies as part of the World Urban Access and Portal Tools (WUDAPT) project. He is a member of the team of global meteorological organizations that are developing the integrated urban services strategy to enable the United Nations Urban Agenda program, which aims to: adopt and implement disaster risk reduction and management, reduce vulnerability, build resilience and responsiveness to natural and man-made hazards, promote climate change mitigation and adaptation. He has been involved with the International Association for Urban Climates (IAUC) since its foundation in 2000 and has been editor of its newsletter (Urban News), as President and Treasurer.
He started his career after university in 1993 in Andersen Consulting (now Accenture): 13 years of experience in the energy sector, both in process reengineering and systems integration, managing several projects in the main national and international energy operators and in the different energy value chains. In 2007 he moved from consulting and joined, as IT Head, Energie Investimenti (a dual fuel sales JV between Gaz De France and CAMFIN SpA) managing the integration and start-up of Italcogim Energie. In 2010 he was promoted as CIO in GDF SUEZ Energia Italia & South Europe (now ENGIE), which consolidated the group’s Italian GDF SUEZ activities in electricity, dual fuel sales and infrastructure. In 2015 it becomes Group CIO of A2A. In 2016 he founded A2A Smart City, the NewCo that designs and builds digital sustainable cities and smart cities (www.a2asmartcity.it) based on new emerging innovative technologies, which today employs > 140 human resources, has reached 10M € EBITDA and has recently launched the roadmap to achieve the Benefits-Corporation certification (SDG sustainability mark). Today as CIO of the A2A Group is also responsible for the Roadmap for the Transformation of Digital Innovation.
Full professor of Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil-Environmental Engineering and Architecture of the University of Cagliari, Italy, where he teaches the academic courses of Contaminated Sites Recovery & Remediation, and Solid Waste Management. He is the chairman of the Geoengineering and Environmental Technologies PhD Course Committee of the University of Cagliari. His main fields of interest are solid waste management, energy and material recovery from waste, hazardous waste stabilization, soil and sediment remediation. In last 15 years he has worked on several national and international projects focusing on energy recovery from biodegradable residues through biological processes and remediation of contaminates soils and sediments. He is author and co-author of about 190 scientific papers published on international and national journals, international and national books, proceedings of international conferences. He is Co-Chairman of the Task Group on Waste Biorefinery of the International Waste Working Group (IWWG).
Graduated in building engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan in 2008 and he specialized in designing of energy efficient building and territorial energy planning working for both the private and public sector. He has been working as a new territories development specialist for Edison Group since 2017 dealing with the analysis of the natural potentials and anthropic features of the territory for business development, the identification of projects and initiatives to develop in the field of energy efficiency, building energy renovation, district heating networks and sustainable mobility, and the implementation of multifunction and multiscale digital tools and platforms to plan, design and manage smart cities and territories with different types of detail, from the building level to the urban one.

Stefano Pili Graduated in Environmental Engineering and in Architectural Engineering at the university of Cagliari. He take the PhD in Land and Urban Planning (2012) with a thesis about a GIS based decision support system for the integration of building energy efficiency in the urban planning process.
His main research interests are: energy efficiency of the building heritage, protection and enhancement of historic centers and wetlands and, more widely, GIS based methodologies to support urban planning and land sustainable development.
Actually he works at the Sotacarbo SPA and is involved on the project AUREE (Urban Energy Abacus of the buildings heritage) that is a GIS Based tool aimed to support the urban building heritage renovation and energy efficiency enhancement process. The project develops and tests an approach based on a simple Urban Building Energy Modeling (UBEM) and a web based participative tool specifically addressed to small or medium sized Cities. The case studio is based on the city of Carbonia (20.000 inh.) of the southern Sardinia (Italy)
Responsible for the direction of Research Product Design at Planet Smart City. With a PhD in Architecture, she worked as a lecturer in Architectural and Urban Design at the Polytechnic of Turin, with a focus on Smart City issues. Her path with the company began in 2016 and since then has played a key role in the development of the world’s first smart city with social housing for 20,000 inhabitants, currently under construction in Fortaleza, Brazil. She has also actively contributed to upcoming developments in India, such as R10 in Life Republic, Pune, where she developed the Innovation Hub project. Her areas of expertise include innovation and research on intelligent solutions to integrate into urban design. She has experience and extensive knowledge on modeling procedures, best practices and innovative business models that enhance real estate values. She is also the author of numerous international publications related to contemporary housing culture, architects and masters of contemporary history. Her book “Gio Ponti, Master of Lightness” has been published by TASCHEN in five languages. She has written articles and worked on the scientific committee of the Encyclopedia The A-Z of Modern Architecture, published by Taschen.

His current research activities range from risk analysis to the design of Decision Support Systems for the management of complex technological networks. He holds the role of Supervisor and Evaluator of projects for the EU, for the Ministry of University and Research and for the Ministry of Economic Development; he is also consultant of several Italian Regions and the Ministry of Defence. He is and has been Coordinator of several National Projects. He is co-founder and majority shareholder of Ylichron Srl (a software engineering company) and Genechron Srl (a biotechnology company) where he currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is author of more than 120 scientific articles in specialized journals.
Giuseppina Vacca Professor of Topography and Photogrammetry at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Architecture Engineering of the University of Cagliari. Her research activities mainly concern Digital Terrestrial and Drone-based Photogrammetry, Topographic DBs and Geographic Information Systems, Laser scanner survey systems. Associate Editors of the International magazine “Applied Geomatics” published by Springer. Since 2007 she has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Society of Photogrammetry and Topography (SIFET) of which she was president from 2015 to 2018. From 2012 to 2016 Co-Chair of WG II/7 Intelligent Spatial Decision Support of the International Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing. From 2016 to date Co-Chair of WG IV/6 SDI: Internet of Things and Spatial Decision Support of ISPRS. Since 2018 President of the Training School Foundation of the Order of Engineers of the Province of Cagliari.
Dan Van Der Horst
Is an expert on societal transitions towards sustainability and holds a personal Chair in Energy, Environment & Society at the University of Edinburgh. Has extensive experience in leading and supervising interdisciplinary, citizen-oriented and policy-relevant research on the adoption of low carbon technologies and lifestyles. He has (co-)authored >100 research papers and reports in the last 16 years and developed a novel interdisciplinary MSc programme called Energy, Society and Sustainability, attracting > 100 students since 2016.
