The International Smart Cities School: immagination, planning, governance e tools, is one of the initiatives of Tomorrow’s Cities Lab.
This year, in a winter edition because of the Covid-19 emergency, it foresees a ten days program organized in collaboration with the “Smart Cityness Festival”.
The School aims to promote the city development in the smart, sustainable and resilient way through the more suited technologies according to a strategic and systemic vision. Moreover, the School aims to create an eco-system of academies, institutions and enterprises to create networking opportunities to promote virtuous exchanges and knowledge transfer.
The School target are public officers, graduates and professionals and is based on a design thinking approach integrated with lectures and practical case illustrations. The School aims to distinguish itself thanks to an interdisciplinary and multistakeholders approach to the subject, providing the participants with the tools and capabilities they need to operate in the tomorrow’s cities.
Each year the School faces the smart city concept from a different point of view. The focus of the 2020 will be on “Energies of, and for, the city”.
The Graduation Laboratories are conceived as an interdisciplinary training opportunity freely proposed by the professors belonging to the “Tomorrow’s cities Lab” and for the moment not connected to the recognition of educational credits.
Consistent with the guidelines contained in law 240/2010, the Laboratories are one of the main places of convergence between teaching and research, in order to favor a continuous and fruitful interaction between scientific research contributions, cultural needs and skills.
The laboratories aim to be a privileged place for disciplinary exchange as well as for the integration between the research activities conducted in the individual Departments, which constitute the engine of the training offer.
Given the complexity and transversal nature of the training objectives, the Laboratories will offer the participating students a degree course developed through the participation in an interdisciplinary team for the development of a project relating to an urban portion. In addition to learning to work in a team and to understand different languages, the laboratory proposes as a further objective that of respecting delivery times, given the needs of each participant to define their training path in certain times.
The contribution of the individual undergraduates will in fact be used to develop a complex project in a logic of mutual exchange of skills, as required by the current market demand, while maintaining its own specificity that will be enhanced in the context of the elaboration of one’s thesis that will be discussed within the respective degree courses.
Each laboratory is made up of one or more coordinators flanked by a teaching staff who can be formed, in addition to the professors belonging to the “Tomorrow’s Cities Lab”, also by professors, researchers or PhDs from other Departments, Universities or Research Centers Italians and foreigners, in order to facilitate and promote cultural exchanges and forms of internationalization and collaboration between different institutions.
The Laboratories offer diversified training activities suitable for the development of degree theses, which are divided into meetings, thematic seminars, conferences, collective reviews and what is deemed necessary to support the research work of undergraduates and to facilitate comparison and discussion between participants. . These activities will be concentrated in the second semester of the second year of the Master’s Degree.
In connection with the other graduate laboratories, with the courses of the Master’s Degrees, with the Masters active in various capacities in the chosen field, with the PhDs and with the Laboratories and research groups of the Department, the Laboratories promote in particular:
agreements and conventions with public and private institutions
publishing activity of the most interesting theses
internships and internships
Each year the study areas on which to define the projects are identified, selected in relation to the demand from the institutions with which the teachers are in contact and the teaching and research activities of the individual teachers.
The course, in the 1 year of the master’s degree in Architecture, aims to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge and development of skills and autonomy of judgment related to the concept of the Smart City with particular attention to the dynamics of urban development and the implementation and management of innovative processes within the city.
